A snow ball is a ball filled with water in glass or plastic, in which there are also small particles, stir in the shaking and then slowly drop as snow again. The balls contain small figurines or miniature landscapes that are "snowed in" when shaken.
When the very first snow globe was made is not known. A forerunner was a water-filled glass ball floating in the birds. The alchemist Leonhard Thurneysser they did in 1572 Grimnitzer of the glassworks make. One of the oldest historically famous snow balls was in 1878 on display at the Paris World Exhibition. The subject was a man with an open umbrella.
End of the 19th Century Viennese invented the surgical instrument mechanic Erwin Perzy the snow globe as it were new, and was the first person who patented the "glass ball with snow" effect. Actually Perzy had specialized in the manufacture of surgical instruments. At the request of surgeons, he wanted to develop a very bright light source, which he tried out a so-called Schuster ball. It consists of a water-filled spherical glass flask which is placed in front of burning candles, so that it amplifies the candlelight. Perzy mixed with the water glass chips, to enhance the reflection.
The swirling snow shavings reminded him and brought him up with the idea of the snow globe. He built a tiny model of the basilica of Mariazell, she placed in a glass ball, filled with water and semolina added to the form of snow. This model gave a friend who owned a souvenir stand, where it met with strong interest from customers. In 1900 with his brother Louis opened Perzy together an operation to devote himself entirely to the production of glass beads. This farm still exists today and is now led by Erwin Perzys eponymous grandson.
In the 1950s, joined a number of manufacturers of polystyrene in place of the glass, the "snowflakes" are now usually made of a plastic mixture. Additives to the water to prevent formation of algae. Thanks to modern manufacturing methods, the snow globe has become a mass product. On newer models, can top up evaporated water with a syringe.
